Columbia's Commitment to Anti-Racism

July 20, 2020

We invite and encourage all Columbia community members to get involved in the action plan set out by President Bollinger to address the structures and consequences of racism, and anti-Black racism in particular.

Please join us. The Office of University Life, together with the offices of the Provost and Government and Community Affairs, will work with students, faculty and staff on:

  • Identifying systemic issues in our own community along with solutions to address them
  • Forming a working group with leadership from the Office of Public Safety to ensure we have truly inclusive safety practices on our campus. This will include reviewing existing trainings and practices and developing recommendations.
  • Strengthening our connections in both Harlem and Washington Heights in three ways: growing existing successful partnerships, inviting new ideas for collaboration, and creating a University-wide infrastructure to reflect and support the breadth and depth of our work and to facilitate engagement from neighborhood community members. (For more information on some of our current partnerships, see the Columbia Neighbors hub.)

If you have questions, suggestions or would like to get involved, please let us know. There are also many actions underway in all of Columbia’s schools and institutes, so please be in touch with your school or institute if you would like to be involved there. We look forward to working with you.
