Voter Registration and Student Civic Engagement Opportunities

September 22, 2020

Dear Students,

Registering to vote and finding other ways to express your views are fundamental components of civic engagement. Your participation helps ensure that elected officials understand the interests and views of those who live and work in the communities they represent.

Whatever your immigration or citizenship status, get a jump-start on learning more about the November 3rd U.S. general election. Visit CU EngageVoting Week at Columbia and ColumbiaVotes for many events and other ways to get involved.

If you’re a U.S. citizen, we urge you to register now, if you haven’t already, and consider voting by absentee ballot, especially if voting will require you to travel to a state on New York’s COVID-19 quarantine list. Here is information on how to get started:

  • For New York residents: Not registered yet? October 9th is the deadline – register NOW online or by mail. To request an absentee ballot, use New York’s online portal. Columbia University is proud to serve as an early voting location on both the Morningside and CUIMC campuses. For more information on early voting times and locations in New York City, visit vote.nyc. For additional information on New York City voting, check Who’s On the Ballot, a project of Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs.
  • For residents of other states: To register or apply for an absentee ballot, visit Columbia Turbo Vote. You can also find information about voting and contests in all 50 states at Project Vote Smart and at vote.columbia.edu. Look out for an email from us about deadlines in your state in the coming days.
  • Not sure if you’re registered? Visit vote.org to check on your registration status.
  • Other questions? Write to Tricia Shimamura in Government and Community Affairs at [email protected].

We know that voter turnout increases when people urge each other to vote. Whatever your voting preference, we hope that Columbia students will do their part to increase turnout and help make sure your voices are heard come November 3rd.

Sincerely,
