From Southern California to Chennai to Cairo

December 04, 2015

As we head into the weekend, we are mindful of recent harrowing events in Cairo, Egypt; Chennai, India; and San Bernardino, California, as well as elsewhere in the world.

Whether human-made or natural disaster, our thoughts are with those who have suffered losses from devastation in each of these cities – and with the extended community at Columbia who may have ties to the local areas.

While we cannot easily account for or remedy the root of these and other tragic situations that we learn of so upsettingly often, we can provide support to members of our community who are directly or emotionally affected by these events. Students can request counseling assistance on ColumbiaColumbia University Irving Medical Center and Barnard campuses and pastoral counseling from the University Chaplain’s office. International students also can seek support or referrals through the International Students and Scholars Office.

Extending kindness and compassion in our day to day lives can feel small in light of global events, but may matter hugely to someone in our community. Many here are ready to listen and can help to create and offer options where needed.
